Honduras beaches

I have been to many beautiful places in the Caribbean and Hawaii. They all have one thing in common and that is that the water is that clear aqua blue color that looks great in pictures. In places like Cancun and Cuba the sand is very white, whereas Hawaii has a more golden color and in some spots black sand. When I went to Trujillo, I was expecting something similar with Honduras beaches, but I was surprised at what I found. The whole area around Trujillo is near some rather large mountains that are up to 5000 feet high. Of course this being Honduras, there is no snow up there, just beautiful green lush vegetation that includes many palm trees, even at the very top. I mention the mountains and vegetation because they seem to have some sort of effect on the color of the water in the ocean, or rather how it looks. Just like everywhere else in the Caribbean, the water is crystal clear but it has a very unique dark green tint to it that I have never seen before. It is just as beautiful as the usual Caribbean water, but it is distinctly different. The sand varies quite a lot from one section of the beach to another. Sometimes it is almost white, but usually it is a more golden color like Hawaii. There are many spots where it is also black mixed with golden sand. I went in August so the water temperature was bath tub warm and apparently it is pretty much always like that even in January. One word of caution though is that if it rains hard, and it does during the rainy season, the runoff will come down from the mountains and drain into the ocean, so the water can become quite murky for a day or two.

What about Jelly fish in the water of Honduras beaches?

A small storm blew through Trujillo one night and that must have changed some of the ocean currents because the next day we started seeing some Jelly fish. This freaked us out because we knew that sometimes these things can be really dangerous like the Portuguese Man of War which has a very painful sting. However we were assured by the locals and the Canadians and Americans that were living in the area that the Jelly fish that come into the bay at Trujillo are fairly harmless. We later verified this when our 13 year old son was stung by one of them and it amounted to the same thing as a bee sting. He didn’t miss a beat and kept swimming and having fun in the water. We even guided one onto the beach then proceeded to examine it just out of curiosity. They are actually quite pretty and we saw some in yellow, and there were also some that were blue, and even some that were almost transparent. I guess you should still exercise caution just in case a scary one makes it into the bay, but you can’t worry about it all the time.

Honduras beaches

My overall impression of Honduras beaches?

When we were in Trujillo, we stayed a beautiful little resort that consisted of 5 concrete beach houses, each with a view of the ocean. For the first few nights we were the only people there, along with the Honduran staff. We had the entire beach to ourselves. There were miles and miles of deserted beach for us to walk on. The fact that we were the only one’s there and the quality of the beach and water, made it one of the best beach vacations we have ever been on. I would highly recommend a stay on  Honduras beaches in Trujillo. Just don’t expect the commercialism of Cancun.
